This is a great site. All of a sudden, my 85 YO husband who has LBD and Parkinson's has decided he doesn't like to eat except ice cream, pasta, cherries. I've tried everything to provide nutritious food becuse he's diabetic, but the other day, his PC said to let him eat whatever he wants. That's hard for me. Yet, here, I see others doing the exact same thing. Thank you so much for sharing. It helps us.

I have to laugh. My father (Alz/Dem) demanded Moose Tracks ice cream up until the day he died. And he got it. My mother (Vasc.Dem) wants oatmeal raisin cookies. She can have as many as she wants, though I try to only have a few (4?) on hand or she would plow through the whole container!! Small pleasures unless there is a medical reason to restrict.

This is the first time reading this article. I am a professional Police Officer in Washington, D.C. for over 25 years. I am currently caring for a father who is 90 yrs old, who had a stroke, but still full of fire in his soul. And a brother in Az. who came down with some flu that has put him into a coma. Not sto ay the least, every day I answer calls for police service that are more medical than criminal. Thank you for the great information. We all need a hug and a smile.

Just watch out for stevia migranes. If you are allergic to ragweed you may be susceptible.

If you are aiming for high caloric intake the other thing is to use products like ensure plus and boost plus and the shop brand equivalents. There are good recipes online you can make including these which will bump up the calories in foods they like already.

Don't dismiss pureed foods when taste is the # 1 focus. I started Smoothe Foods for that reason. My father had Alzheimer's and we did feed him baby food since there were no other options. Great tasting pureed meals are just as palatable as a smoothie. Just a different name!

P.S. My dad ate ice cream 'till the very end. It was a joy in life to him.

I used to sprinkle sugar over Mom's veggies and she eagerly ate them right down! When quizzed on this topic, her doctor also asked me, "What are you trying to do? Extend her life span?" She was already quite old and had dementia. Point made. She's now 100 and still trucking along, but in a memory care facility. I don't obcess about diet any more.

I completely agree with the philosophy behind this. And when I'm 80, nobody better try to restrict me to things that are "good for me"! Hey, mental health counts too!

I, also, liked it. I even felt bad that I've been giving father Almond chocolate milk. It's not even real milk, no calcium in it. So, I need to go find a replacement for that, at least something with calcium in it. He's been craving ice cream and I keep forgetting to buy it. But, it helps us to see that it's okay to satisfy their sweet tooth, but ensure that it's nutritional at the same time. (I took a peek on the link for the smoothie.)
