I have noticed the last four months that my mother has made increasing comments that are not true. Some statements may be confabulation; others are more allegations. Obviously her illness is progressing. How do you deal with non-family members who are the target?

People who have dealt with the issue that you are describing say that they have handed out printed cards to give to strangers saying that their family member has dementia and is no longer aware of what they are saying.

I think they can be ordered online.

Best wishes to you and your family.

You can give them a "look" behind Moms back so they know something is going on. Point to ur head, again behind her back. Or, hand them the card discreetly.

It sounds as though you are talking about comments circulating "through the grapevine" rather than something in the moment, I think the only way to counter that kind of gossip is to let it be known that your mother has dementia and what she says can't be trusted. (If you are religious a few prayers at your religious services can go a long way to spreading the news, and prayers themselves are never a bad thing). People will either choose to believe her stories or they won't, there's not much you can do about it.
